The Sacrament of Baptism

What is the Sacrament of Baptism?

Through the mystery of baptism, instituted by the Savior, the human being who believes in Christ, is reborn through water and the Spirit to the true life in Christ and becomes a member of the Church. The sacrament takes place through the threefold immersion of the one being baptized in water and in the name of the Holy Trinity. The celebrant is the priest or bishop, and it is only in the case of an urgent necessity, such as the imminent death of the one to be baptized, that this sacrament can be administered by any member of the Church. (Fr Dumitru Stăniloae)

Where Can the Baptism Take Place?

The Sacrament of Baptism must take place in the church building, not at a private home, beach, park, etc. Since marriage is a sacrament intimately tied to the life of the Church, it must be administered within the Church, which resides in the physical building, under the authority of the bishop.

The Godparents (Nașii)

The godfather or godmother have to be practicing Orthodox Christians, affiliated with a parish and receiving the Sacraments of the Church on regular basis.
In case you choose a family, the two spouses have to be married in the church.
(It is not unusual for our priest to ask for a letter of good standing from the parish priest of the future godparents.)
